We all want glowing, radiant skin.
But if your lifestyle is anything like most folks these days, your skin has probably seen better days. Between late nights, early mornings, blue light from screens, limited sunlight from being indoors most of the time, and questionable quality "on-the-go" meals" despite trying to eat healthy, your skin may be crying for help.
Don't despair! Your skin is usually one of the first parts of your body to give you signs that your overall health could use some rebalancing - so just listen, and make some simple adjustments to help it out!
On my journey these past few years to gently nurse my overall body back to health (hello, 90's babies, born & raised in the processed food era!), I’ve compiled a list of few simple tips that will bring life right back to dull + tired skin.
Doing it all at once may sound intimidating, so try adding in 1 of of these new habits at a time. Once you've stuck to it for a few weeks, add another. Its easier to make lasting change gradually. Small, simple tweaks create a snowball effect where more healthy habits are created and bad ones are left behind - for good!
HOW TO GET GLOWING SKIN
- #1: Prioritize Proper Rest. Sleep is critical. It's the foundation for good health, there's no way around it. As a new mom, I understand how this one can feel impossible at times, but if you don’t have a tiny human in need of your care 24/7, I highly recommend making sleep a priority. Getting a full night’s rest (7-9 hours) allows your organs to detox & recharge, restores the skin’s moisture balance, stimulates collagen, and fights puffiness and inflammation. The internal benefits show on your skin!
- #2: Build Meals around Nutrients. We've all heard the saying, "you are what you eat", and it's true. How can you expect to have healthy skin if your insides are crying because they're not being well fed? Coming from someone who's had a lot of internal gut healing work to do - don't underestimate the impact of food & diet. Prioritize nutrients! Build your meals around nutrient dense proteins (organic, grass fed meats, wild caugh fish, pasture raised poultry) and add fiber (spaghetti squash, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, yucca, plantains, microgreens, dark leafy greens, etc.), healthy fats (avocados, coconut oil, butter, tallow), and antioxidants to your diet (think all the yummy berries)! Eat real, whole foods and ditch the processed stuff. Your skin will thank you.
- #3 Improve your circulation. When blood flow is boosted, your complexion becomes radiant and inflammation is drastically reduced, thanks to much needed nourishment being sent to your skin cells. Exercise is key. Get your blood pumping, whatever that looks like for you. Do something EVERY DAY to MOVE! Start with long walks if you're going from ground zero. Add in swimming, biking, rollerblading. Do some jumping jacks or jumping squats. Hit the gym and lift some weights! An active body is a healthy body with healthy skin!
- #4: Let the SUN on your skin. Spending healthy amounts of time in the sun is vital for achieving optimal whole-body and skin health. One of the most important benefits of sunlight is Vitamin D, which is necessary for thousands of processes that occur within the body. It also provides a beautiful sunkissed glow that just can’t be replicated with bronzer. Start by trying to spend 5-10 minutes in the sun every morning before you start your day and every evening before the sun sets. You can even do this in the winter when there's less daylight overall, as it also helps regulate your circadian rhythm. With warm summer weather coming, boost that to at least an hour per day, but avoid peak UV hours for skin safety - keep your sunning to before 1030AM or after 430PM.
- #5: Clean up your skincare routine.
